Flight Planning iPad App (2012-13)
I led a three member design team working on creating the first iteration of Honeywell's myGDC iPad app, used by pilots and flight dispatchers for filing and viewing flight plans. Early on in the project, I conducted immersive user research by spending two days shadowing dispatchers at Honeywell's data centre in Hyderabad, India. I also conductive formative interviews with corporate pilots from Honeywell and NetJets. Secondary research was performed by doing cognitive walkthroughs and feature comparisons of similar applications from Foreflight, WingX and Garmin. This resulted in a set of user requirements, which I then prioritized based on inputs from marketing requirements, as well as development constraints. These led to the early concepts for the app.
In addition to driving the design and managing execution, I was also tasked with ensuring regulatory compliance. I ensured that the design conformed to the standards prescribed in the FAA's Advisory Circular AC 120-76B governing electronic flight bags (a category that includes iPads) by reviewing the design against the standards. I also developed iconography based on flight charts used by pilots, to ensure that the information in the app is similar to the paper charts pilots are familiar with.
